Simplified Reactor Design for Mixed Culture-Based Electrofermentation toward Butyric Acid Production

نویسندگان

چکیده

Mixed microbial culture (MMC) electrofermentation (EF) represents a promising tool to drive metabolic pathways toward the production of specific compound. Here, MMC-EF process has been exploited obtain butyric acid in simplified membrane-less reactors operated by applying difference potential between two low-cost graphite electrodes. Ten values voltage difference, from −0.60 V −1.5 V, have tested and compared with experiment under open circuit (OCP). In all conditions, an enhancement rate (from synthetic mixture glucose, acetate, ethanol) was observed, ranging 1.3- 2.7-fold relative OCP. Smaller enhancements resulted higher calculated energy consumption. However, at applied voltages, low flow current detected one-chamber reactors, accounting for average value approximately −100 µA. These results hold substantial respect scalability technology, since they pinpoint possibility control MMC-based bioprocesses simply inserting polarized electrodes into traditional fermenters.

Lactic Acid production in a mixed-culture biofilm reactor.

Novel solid supports, consisting of polypropylene blended with various agricultural materials (pp composite), were evaluated as supports for pure- and mixed-culture continuous lactic acid fermentations in biofilm reactors. Streptomyces viridosporus T7A (ATCC 39115) was used to form a biofilm, and Lactobacillus casei subsp. rhamnosus (ATCC 11443) was used for lactic acid production. For mixed-cu...

Consolidated Bioprocessing for Butyric Acid Production from Rice Straw with Undefined Mixed Culture

Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable source with great potential for biofuels and bioproducts. However, the cost of cellulolytic enzymes limits the utilization of the low-cost bioresource. This study aimed to develop a consolidated bioprocessing without the need of supplementary cellulase for butyric acid production from lignocellulosic biomass. A stirred-tank reactor with a working volume of...

Butyric acid fermentation of sodium hydroxide pretreated rice straw with undefined mixed culture.

This study describes an alternative mixed culture fermentation technology to anaerobically convert lignocellulosic biomass into butyric acid, a valuable product with wide application, without supplementary cellulolytic enzymes. Rice straw was soaked in 1% NaOH solution to increase digestibility. Among the tested pretreatment conditions, soaking rice straw at 50°C for 72 h removed ~66% of the li...

Production of Butyric Acid and Butanol from Biomass

Butanol replaced gasoline gallon for gallon in a 10,000 miles trip across the United States without the need to highly modify a '92 Buick (your existing car today). Butanol can now be made for less than ethanol and yields more Btu's from the same corn, making the plow to tire equation positive – more energy out than it takes to make it and Butanol is much safer. Butanol when substituted for gas...

Bacterial Wall Attachment in a Flow Reactor: Mixed Culture

A mathematical model of a mixed culture of bacteria in a fully three dimensional flow reactor which accounts for the colonization of the reactor wall surface by the microbes is studied both analytically and by simulation. It can be viewed as a model of the large intestine or of the fouling of a commercial bio-reactor or pipe flow. The primary focus is on coexistence of microbial populations in ...
